Any independent filmmaker will tell you, success always comes at a price. When Kevin Smith hit it big with Clerks, there were any number of studios lining up to pay him a lot of money to make his next picture. Universal Pictures came through with 6 million dollars, a staggering contrast to Smith’s previous budget of 230 thousand for Clerks. However, with the promise of money, comes a catch 22 of sorts. The studio wanted to replace Jason Mewes with a more recognizable and bankable young star. Seth Green and Breckin Meyer were considered for the role. In the end though, Smith fought to keep Jason Mewes in the film, and won.

If you’re a Kevin Smith fan (and who out there isn’t) then you must know of his fondness of certain film icons, like Star Wars and Jaws. In every film, there are at least 4 or 5 references to each of these two films. In Mallrats, the two lead characters are named Brodie Bruce and T.S Quint. Which is a direct reference to Jaws, in which there were characters named Quint and Brodie. “Bruce” was taken from the nickname the Jaws crew had given to the mechanical shark.
