Oh brother. There's something to be said for healthy sibling rivalry. When Charlie Sheen first auditioned for the role of Chris Taylor, he was turned down because the producers thought he was too young for the role. His older brother Emilio was offered the role, but the financing for the film eventually fell through. Two years later, when the project was finally given the full go ahead, Emilio could no longer take the part because he was committed to other projects. Therefore, two years older, Charlie read for the part again, and won it.

It's no wonder that the decidedly anti-war stance of the film is not exactly a favourite among the military ranks. However, the film has been viewed in many military leadership classes; the character of Lt. Wolfe is used as an example of how not to behave as a junior officer.

Several of the actors wanted to have little messages written on their helmets during filming. Charlie Sheen's message, in pure brat pack fashion, was 'When I die, bury me upside-down, so the world can kiss my...'. Assume the last word is unlady-like to repeat.
