“It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare.”

The films budget was nothing if not challenging at 300,000 dollars; and almost half of that went to buying the camera equipment.
A few things that the director and producers did to save some money:
Since the movie was actually shot in spring, the crew had to buy paper leaves from a decorator and paint them in the desired autumn colors, then scatter them in the filming locations. After a scene was filmed, the leaves were collected and reused
The costume department was virtually non-existent, so most of the actors wore their own clothes.
Instead of getting the art department to create a creepy mask for Michael Myers to wear, the crew went to a costume shop and found a William Shatner mask.
The crew simply teased the hair, re-shaped the eye holes, painted it white and voila, The Shape is born.
He may have gone where no man has gone before, but I’m sure Bill Shatner was just the tiniest bit shocked that his face was the perfect look for a sociopathic serial killer.
Me? I have no doubt.

The original title was supposed to be “The Babysitter Murders”, but when a producer suggested that it should take place on Halloween night, the title changed to Halloween.

It doesn’t pay to kill. Literally. Nick Castle, the body behind the mask, was only paid 25 dollars a day. The shoot lasted a mere 21 days.
