It’s another classic in a long line of classics from the master himself. Working off a sparkling Ernest Lehman script, Hitch delivers a thrilling breezy ride of a movie involving Cold War espionage. The film features two unforgettable sequences – the crop duster chase and the Mount Rushmore finale. It also doesn’t hurt that Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint have great screen chemistry. But did you know that the starring roles were originally intended for James Stewart and Cyd Charisse? You can’t quite picture Mr. Stewart delivering those sex soaked lines can you? As for the role of Ms. Kendall, Hitch insisted on Eva Marie Saint. Why? It is said that Hitch had a thing for beautiful blondes. Let me see…Grace Kelly (Rear Window/To Catch A Thief), Janet Leigh (Psycho) and Tippi Hendren (Birds/Marnie). Hmmm. Do you see a pattern? And lastly, Hitch may be the first director to commit to film the image of a train entering a dark tunnel as a sly visual presentation of sexual intercourse. Have a look for yourself. It’s the last part right after the scene where we find Cary and Eva, newly married, in their railway car. Hitch is such a naughty prankster.
